They do not merely list controls. They:

* define assets, trust boundaries, and failure modes;
* place controls in the right layer;
* explain trade-offs in cost, latency, resilience, ownership, and operability;

**Strong answer should cover**

* Secure-by-default means unsafe paths are harder or impossible without an explicit conscious override.
* Documentation-only guidance is advisory and erodes under delivery pressure.
* Mature architects design safe primitives, not only wiki pages.

#### 8. How do you decide when to centralize a control versus embed it into the product team stack?

**Strong answer should cover**

* Centralize when policy consistency, specialist ownership, or shared evidence matters.
* Embed when latency to decision or product context matters.
* The winning pattern is often platformized central controls with local product ownership.

#### 9. What makes a threat model useful rather than decorative?

#### 13. A product team wants to let support engineers impersonate customers for faster debugging. What would you design?

**Strong answer should cover**

* High-risk feature requiring approval, strong audit trail, scope restriction, maybe read-only modes, bannered sessions, and customer/legal constraints.
* Possibly use delegated support session tokens instead of silent impersonation.
* Discuss abuse and insider risk explicitly.

#### 14. A company is moving from VM monoliths to microservices. Where do you expect risk to rise first?

**Strong answer should cover**

* Identity sprawl, secret distribution, ingress/egress exposure, environment drift, and release-plane complexity.
* Monitoring, evidence, and ownership also usually lag the architecture change.

#### 15. You inherit a platform with five overlapping policy engines. How do you rationalize it?

**Strong answer should cover**

* Inventory policy decisions by layer and owner.
* Remove overlap where one engine can be authoritative.
* Preserve evidence and exceptions; do not rip-and-replace blindly.
* The goal is clearer control placement and lower operator confusion.

#### 16. Engineering wants to defer mTLS because "the network is private." How do you respond?

* Private does not mean trusted. East-west paths, identity spoofing, and lateral movement still matter.

#### 17. You are asked whether to buy a commercial CNAPP or improve native controls first. How do you answer?
